Concordia Theater

Concordia Theater

Erected on 18 March 1721 in a Hall of the South Eastern Residential Wing of the castle. Francesco Cassi, Giulio Perticari and General Guglielmo Pepe performed there. Vincenzo Monti's tragedies were previewed inside.

Before 1721, in the south-eastern wing of the castle, a room was usually used to give performances or organize celebrations, which interested the entire community. On March 18, 1721, a theatrical society was founded and the former hall, with appropriate adaptation works financed by some families, rose to the rank of theatre. This is the historical moment in which the beginning of the activities of “concord” takes place. The foundation of the theatrical society was, most likely, favored by the numerous and noble families who at that time lived and frequented San Costanzo. Since its inception, the theatre was open to the population and was therefore not a private structure, reserved for a small circle of people. Countess Costanza Monti loved acting in the theatre and the company included Count Francesco Cassi, Giulio Perticari and General Guglielmo Pepe. Alfieri's tragedies were performed at the “Della Concordia”, preferably Saul, the aristodemus del Monti and Goldoni's comedies. In the 1960s and 1970s, there were frequent vigils organized at “Della Concordia” by various local societies. Worthy of note for some years was the “five thousand old man” which, without emphasis, could be considered historical. The stars of the moment were invited, from Nilla Pizzi to Fred Buscaglione to Rita Pavone. Restored in the late 1980s, it hosts important theatre and music festivals. Nonetheless, the memory of the comic companies, the 19th-century tombolas, the Perticari, the beautiful Costanza, the Monti premieres, the veglioni, and everything that has been lost will continue to make this theater, in the years to come, one of the most renowned in our province. The Theatre “of Concord” boasts a feature: from its stage you can see the sea.
